A variety of camps and lodges are available when staying in Uganda and Rwanda however the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central Africa only has a very limited infrastructure and therefore accommodation choices are limited. In this section we try to provide information on the various accommodation choices in each destination.
Uganda Accommodation: Camps and Lodges
A variety of camps and lodges are available in Uganda in the gorilla trekking region of Bwindi. We hvae listed below some of our favourites to give you an overview of your preferred option:
Gorilla Forest Camp – the most luxurious lodge in the Bwindi region. Owned and run by Sanctuary Lodges, Gorilla Forest Camp offers clients the deserved comfort that they are looking for after a hard day of gorilla tracking. Large cosy tents with ensuite bathrooms, large bathtubs with views over the forest and private terraces providing comfy relaxation.
Buhoma Lodge – a mid-range but very good option. Large cottages set amongst the trees with views into the valley and forest opposite. Unfortunately these views are over the road however it is a small road and therefore you hardly notice it! Ensuite bathrooms with showers and the cottages are tastefully furnished with local architecture.
Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge – a great eco-lodge with some of the best views across the stream into the forest. Thatched bandas constrcuted of local materials with ensuite bathrooms. As it is an eco-lodge bathrooms consist of slef composting toilets, bush showers and the lodge only has solar lighting.
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge – this lodge is located in southern Bwindi at Nkuringo. An expensive but very comfortable lodge.
Rwanda Accommodation: Camps and Lodges
As gorilla trekking safaris increase in Rwanda so does the number of lodges! Please find our preferred choices listed below:
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge – part of the Governor’s Camps collection, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge provides luxury and comfort where it did not exist before. Large luxurious rooms with ensuite bathrooms with huge bathtubs and showers. Open fireplaces provide the warmth needed at the end of a day of gorilla tracking. Set amidst the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes and minutes from the parks entrance this is the most luxurious option when gorilla tracking.
Volcanoes Virunga Lodge – this lodge occupies possibly one of the best lodge locations in Africa. Located at 2,300m with 360 degree views and based at the end of the chain of the 6 Virunga Volcanoes this is a stunning situation to relax in at teh end of a days gorilla tracking. As an eco-lodge the ensuite bathroooms have self-composting toilets and bush showers which is not to everyones taste especially as you are still paying a fair amount!
Uganda and Rwanda Mobile Camping Safaris
At Go Gorilla Trekking we are able to offer a selection of small group mobile camping safaris. These are great fun getting you even closer to the African bush than if you were in a lodge! You are looked after throughout by a full logistics team, drivers, guides and a chef! Accommodation comprises of dome tents with comfy camp beds, bed linen and shared bathroom facilities. This is obviously not to everyone’s taste however it is a fantastic experience and is great value for money!
Central African Accommodation: Camps and Lodges
As mentioned earlier on this page, Central Africa has a very limited infrastructure and therefore accommodation is basic to say the least!
Doli Lodge – an old fishing lodge on the banks of the Dzangha River. Stilted rooms with private verandahs afford views through the trees and over the river. You may often be woken by cheeky monkeys playing in the treetops outside your room! Ensuite bathrooms are western in style but basic with cold running water. The main dining and bar area is a great stilted room with views directly onto the river. A great location for tracking the gorillas of Bai Hokou.
Mbeli Bai Camp – a basic camp located on a samll forested island amongst the Mbeli swamps! Closed views as you are surrounded by dense tropical rainforest. This is the only camp in the area and provides the best access to Mbeli Bai. Stilted basic rooms with separate long drop loo and a bucket of water for a shower!
